It&rsquo;s a bit like the original meaning of the phrase <strong>Passe-partout<\/strong>, which is a key that will open any door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a hotel, for example, the staff has master keys in case a guest loses his key or to clean his room. Voil\u00e0, c\u2019est \u00e7a, merci ! \u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0You can pass me that thing, up there, on the shelf&#8230; No, not the dictionary, the thing next to it! That&rsquo;s it, thank you!\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word <strong>truc <\/strong>is not very elegant, of course&#8230; But it can be very handy when French is not your first language. You can replace any noun with this little magic word, but be careful, not verbs or adjectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you don&rsquo;t know a noun, do as the French do, use <strong>truc<\/strong>! Oh yes, Heike, that&rsquo;s it, I had dinner with Heike.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Colloquial expressions with the word TRUC<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The word <strong>truc <\/strong>(thing) is omnipresent in the popular language and is used in many different situations. I have prepared a small selection of very common expressions for you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Maria m\u2019avait propos\u00e9 de faire une sortie en bateau ce weekend, sur le voilier de ses parents. Mais je lui ai r\u00e9pondu que \u00e7a ne serait pas possible parce que j\u2019avais trop de trucs \u00e0 faire (j\u2019avais trop de choses \u00e0 faire, j\u2019\u00e9tais trop occup\u00e9e). \u00c0 dire vrai, moi la mer, c\u2019est pas vraiment mon truc (je n\u2019aime pas vraiment la mer ou j\u2019ai peur en bateau).<\/strong><br>Maria had proposed to me to go on a boat trip this weekend, on her parents&rsquo; sailboat. But I told her it wouldn&rsquo;t be possible because I had too much to do (I had too much to do, I was too busy). To tell you the truth, the sea is not really my thing (I don&rsquo;t really like the sea or I&rsquo;m afraid of boats).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ce soir, on va manger un petit truc en ville (on sort d\u00eener dans un petit restaurant).<\/strong><br>Tonight, we are going to eat a small thing in town (we go out to dine in a small restaurant).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Je ne sais pas ce qui se passe mais je suis certaine qu\u2019il y a un truc qui cloche (il y a quelque chose de bizarre).<\/strong><br>I don&rsquo;t know what&rsquo;s going on but I&rsquo;m sure there&rsquo;s something wrong (there&rsquo;s something weird).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ce n\u2019\u00e9tait vraiment pas gentil de lui dire un truc comme \u00e7a (de lui faire ce type de remarque).<\/strong><br>It was really not nice to say something like that (to make that kind of remark).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u00c7a y est, je crois que j\u2019ai pig\u00e9 le truc (j\u2019ai compris comment \u00e7a fonctionnait).<\/strong><br>I think I got it (I understood how it worked).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>La plong\u00e9e, c\u2019est son nouveau truc (c\u2019est sa nouvelle passion).<\/strong><br>Diving is his new thing (it&rsquo;s his new passion).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tu es malade ? Pr\u00e9pare-toi un grog : tu fais bouillir de l\u2019eau, tu y rajoutes un jus de citron et un peu de rhum. Tu bois le tout et tu te couches. Demain, tu seras en pleine forme ! C\u2019est un truc de grand-m\u00e8re qui marche \u00e0 tous les coups ! (Un rem\u00e8de traditionnel).<\/strong><br>Are you sick? Make yourself a toddy: boil some water, add some lemon juice and a little rum. Drink it all and go to bed. Tomorrow you&rsquo;ll be in great shape! It&rsquo;s a grandma&rsquo;s trick that works every time! (A traditional remedy).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While all of these words are handy to know, it&rsquo;s important to remember that they&rsquo;re still considered informal.
