The answer, as with most things in life, is that it depends of the sentence \ud83d\ude0a<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2192 <strong>Dont <\/strong>is the relative pronoun that must be used for all verbs or verbal phrases building their complement with <strong>de<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Example<\/span>: Parler <strong>de <\/strong>quelque chose : La chose <strong>dont <\/strong>je parle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2192 <strong>Duquel <\/strong>is a compound relative pronoun that is used behind a <strong>preposition + de<\/strong> (<em>\u00e0 cause de, \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de, en raison de, pr\u00e8s de&#8230;<\/em>) to talk about an <strong>object<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u26a0\ufe0f <strong>Attention<\/strong>: to talk about a <strong>person<\/strong>, we use <strong>de qui<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Example<\/span>s: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00catre assis <strong>\u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 du<\/strong> t\u00e9l\u00e9phone : Le t\u00e9l\u00e9phone <strong>\u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 duquel<\/strong> on est assis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00catre assis <strong>\u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Christian<\/span> : Christian, <strong>\u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de qui<\/strong> on est assis&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DONT ou DUQUEL ? We have already seen them in previous articles (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.learn-french-fun.com\/blog\/how-to-use-the-tonic-pronouns-in-french\/\" target=\"_blank\">tonic pronouns<\/a>,<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.learn-french-fun.com\/blog\/the-direct-object-complement-in-french-c-o-d-and-direct-complement-pronouns-le-la-les\/\" target=\"_blank\"> direct complement pronouns<\/a>, or <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.learn-french-fun.com\/blog\/how-to-use-en-and-y-pronoun-in-french\/\" target=\"_blank\">How to use \u00ab en \u00bb and \u00ab y \u00bb pronoun in French?<\/a>), it is a word that replaces one or several other words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>relative pronoun<\/strong> does exactly the same thing. When it&rsquo;s the preposition <strong>de<\/strong>, you use the relative pronoun <strong>dont<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>That&rsquo;s why it&rsquo;s important to know the verbs that are built with <strong>\u00ab\u00a0de\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Like: <strong>parler d&rsquo;une chose<\/strong>. We say : \u00ab\u00a0<strong>du<\/strong>\u00ab\u00a0. Well, this rule also works with the relative pronoun <strong>lequel<\/strong>. <br>The preposition <strong>de <\/strong>+ <strong>lequel <\/strong>= <strong>duquel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be thinking that we just saw that with the preposition <strong>de<\/strong>, we used the relative pronoun <strong>dont<\/strong>! So, how is this possible?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>duquel<\/strong>, you need <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">one more<\/span> preposition<\/strong> that precedes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example: <strong>\u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de<\/strong> (next to)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>\u00ab\u00a0\u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de<\/strong>\u00ab\u00a0, we have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the preposition: <strong>\u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and the preposition: <strong>de<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As there is \u00ab\u00a0<strong>\u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9<\/strong>\u00ab\u00a0, we <strong>can&rsquo;t<\/strong> use <strong>dont<\/strong>, but we have a preposition, and we have seen that with a preposition, we use <strong>lequel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And&#8230; since there&rsquo;s \u00ab\u00a0<strong>de\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong>, we have to do the contraction. \u2192 <strong>DUQUEL<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With an example, it will be clearer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Je suis assis <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de<\/span> <strong>la fen\u00eatre<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>La fen\u00eatre<\/strong> est ouverte.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to make a single sentence with these two sentences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to replace \u00ab\u00a0<strong>la fen\u00eatre<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb in the first sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I notice that just before \u00ab\u00a0<strong>la fen\u00eatre\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong>, there is \u00ab\u00a0<strong>\u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de<\/strong>\u00ab\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So this gives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2192 La fen\u00eatre <strong>\u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de laquelle<\/strong> je suis assis, est ouverte !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8211; But \u00ab\u00a0<strong>de laquelle<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb is not <strong>duquel<\/strong>!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Of course it is! It&rsquo;s just the <strong>feminine<\/strong>. Don&rsquo;t forget, I&rsquo;m replacing \u00ab\u00a0<strong>la fen\u00eatre<\/strong>\u00ab\u00a0.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2192 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Le tableau<\/span> <strong>\u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 duquel<\/strong> je suis assis, est un Picasso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, I replaced \u00ab\u00a0<strong>le<\/strong><strong> tableau<\/strong>\u00ab\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chart to remind you<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What is being replaced is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse has-text-align-center\">Masculine singular? \u2192 <strong>duquel<\/strong>\n\nFeminine singular ? \u2192 <strong>de laquelle<\/strong> (<em>2 words!<\/em>)\n\nMasculine plural? \u2192 <strong>desquels<\/strong>\n\nFeminine plural?&nbsp;\u2192 <strong>desquelles<\/strong><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>\u26a0\ufe0f An important note, when you replace a <strong>person<\/strong>, you don&rsquo;t use <strong>duquel <\/strong>or <strong>de laquelle<\/strong>, but <strong>de qui<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2192 La personne <strong>\u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de qui<\/strong> je suis assis, est allemande.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are DONT and DUQUEL interchangeable?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have read what we have just said, then you know that you <strong>can&rsquo;t<\/strong> interchange <strong>dont <\/strong>and <strong>duquel<\/strong>.
