Each mood has a different function, and thus expresses different things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Indicative (indicatif)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>indicative <\/strong>mood is used to express <strong>facts <\/strong>and <strong>opinions<\/strong>. It is the most common mood, and is used in nearly all everyday conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Example<\/span>: <strong>Je fais du sport<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.learn-french-fun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/indicatif.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It&rsquo;s something objective. It&rsquo;s not a guess, it&rsquo;s not a hypothesis, no, it&rsquo;s objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Subjunctive (subjonctif)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>subjunctive <\/strong>mood is used to express <strong>doubt<\/strong>, <strong>uncertainty<\/strong>, or <strong>wishes<\/strong>. It is frequently used to be polite. <br>It is often used with the word \u00ab\u00a0si\u00a0\u00bb (if) in the sentence structure: <strong>Si + imparfait, alors + conditionnel<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Example<\/span>: <strong>Je ferais du sport<\/strong> <strong>si j&rsquo;avais le temps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.learn-french-fun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/conditionnel.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In this sentence, the verb <strong>faire <\/strong>is conjugated in the <strong>conditional<\/strong>, as we&rsquo;re in the typical case of a hypothesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Imperative (imp\u00e9ratif)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>imperative <\/strong>mood is used to give <strong>commands,<\/strong> <strong>orders <\/strong>or<strong> advices<\/strong>. I use an impersonal form. The word <strong>il<\/strong> does not correspond to anything. It is only the grammatical subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, the <strong>gerund<\/strong>, <strong>infinitive <\/strong>and <strong>participle <\/strong>have the same characteristic. There are <strong>impersonal mood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gerund (g\u00e9rondif)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>gerund<\/strong> mood is used to express the <strong>circumstances of the action of the main verb<\/strong>. These circumstances can be <strong>simultaneity<\/strong>, <strong>cause or manner<\/strong>, <strong>condition <\/strong>and <strong>opposition<\/strong>. <br><em>You will find a complete article and a video that explains the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.learn-french-fun.com\/blog\/all-the-secrets-of-the-french-gerund\/\"> gerund<\/a> in detail.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Infinitiv (infinitf)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>infinitiv <\/strong>mood: very often students are surprised when I tell them that the infinitive is a mood. We could say that :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the <strong>mood <\/strong>of a verb is <strong>step #1<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and the verb <strong>tense <\/strong>is <strong>step #2<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When you speak<\/strong>, you will <strong>first <\/strong>choose the <strong>mood<\/strong>, <strong>then <\/strong>the <strong>tense<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do you want to say something <strong>polite<\/strong>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> You choose the <strong>conditional<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Step 2: <\/strong> in which <strong>tense<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do you want to say something <strong>sure<\/strong>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> You choose the <strong>indicative<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Step 2: <\/strong>And after, in which <strong>tense<\/strong>: <em>pr\u00e9sent, futur, pass\u00e9 compos\u00e9&#8230;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And then<\/strong> there is the question of the verb tense!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&rsquo;s why in each mood &#8211; <em>the 7 moods<\/em> &#8211; there are different tenses.<br>And some moods have many more tenses available than others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the <strong>indicative<\/strong>, you&rsquo;ll find <strong>4 simple<\/strong> and <strong>4 compound tenses<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While in the <strong>conditional <\/strong>you will find only <strong>one simple<\/strong> and <strong>two compound<\/strong> tenses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But don&rsquo;t worry, not all the tenses of the French conjugation are used by the French! So you will never need to know them all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Simple vs. compound tense in French conjugation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>all <\/strong>the moods, you will find <strong>two main categories<\/strong> of tenses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>simple <\/strong>tenses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>compound <\/strong>tenses<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>compound tenses<\/strong> are always composed of :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f3dfa3\"><strong>\u00eatre <\/strong>(to be) or <strong>avoir <\/strong>(to have) + the past participle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is only the conjugation of <strong>\u00eatre <\/strong>or <strong>avoir <\/strong>that will change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#d82743\">\ud83d\udccc <strong>So you must know perfectly the conjugation of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00eatre<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">avoir<\/span>!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Know that <strong>everything you have learned<\/strong> about the <strong>compound tense<\/strong> will work with <strong>all compound tenses<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the choice of <strong>\u00eatre <\/strong>or <strong>avoir<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>past participle with <strong>final <\/strong>-e, -s, -es or nothing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the position of the <strong>negation words<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the position of <strong>pronouns<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>everything<\/strong>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And to help you master French conjugation, we have specially designed a course that explains everything.
