The word \u00ab\u00a0<strong>plus<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb is one of those words for English speakers learning French. This word is often mispronounced by English speakers, but with a little practice you can get it right every time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are <strong>three ways<\/strong> to pronounce the word \u00ab\u00a0<strong>plus<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb in French. (Luc has <strong>never <\/strong>asked him\/her for anything.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And here is <strong>the big difference<\/strong> in meaning!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>if I say: <strong>Il a plus [<\/strong><strong><em>plys<\/em><\/strong><strong>] d&rsquo;argent<\/strong> (He has more money), I insist on the idea of his wealth: he is rich, more and more.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If I say: <strong>Il (n&rsquo;)a plus [<\/strong><strong><em>ply<\/em><\/strong><strong>] d&rsquo;argent<\/strong> (he has no more money), I mean that he used to have money, but now he has lost his money or spent it. In short, the sentence is negative. It&rsquo;s up to you to be careful according to the context and above all, not to make a mistake <strong>between <\/strong>the <strong>positive<\/strong> and <strong>negative <\/strong>meanings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine that you have to eat <strong>snails<\/strong>, <strong>frog legs<\/strong> or <strong>oysters\ud83e\udd22<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have just made a <strong>superhuman effort<\/strong> to taste it and be polite. After a few minutes, the French host asks you if you still want it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You wanted to say \u00ab\u00a0<strong>J&rsquo;en veux plus [ply]<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb but you made the <strong>phonetic mistake of the year<\/strong> and said \u00ab\u00a0<strong>J&rsquo;en veux plus [plys]<\/strong>\u00ab\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too bad for you! You&rsquo;ll have to keep eating \ud83d\ude02\ud83d\ude02<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The moral of the story is this: <strong>be careful with your French words<\/strong>, especially when it comes to comparisons. Make sure you know how to pronounce them correctly, and use the right word depending on the context.
