That is to say that there is, each time, only one letter in the alphabet which has the same phonetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. y<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Its name is \u00ab\u00a0<strong>i grec<\/strong>\u00ab\u00a0. That&rsquo;s how you pronounce the name of the letter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if the letter is in a sentence, in a text, you will pronounce it <strong>[i]<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Examples<\/span>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>J\u2019<strong>y<\/strong> vais.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Y<\/strong>ves.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you spell the name <em>Yves<\/em>, that is, if you say each letter of the name: \u00ab\u00a0<strong>i grec<\/strong> &#8211; v &#8211; e &#8211; s\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. h ???&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u00ab\u00a0h\u00a0\u00bb is not really a vowel, but since it is not pronounced, it<strong> can be considered as a vowel<\/strong>. It is then said to be a <strong>silent \u00ab\u00a0h\u00a0\u00bb (h muet)<\/strong>. This is the case in <strong>almost all words<\/strong> that start with an \u00ab\u00a0h\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Examples<\/span>: <strong>H<\/strong>omme, <strong>h<\/strong>\u00f4tel, <strong>h<\/strong>\u00f4pital, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two consequences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. You have<strong> to know<\/strong> <strong>the spelling of the word<\/strong> because you can&rsquo;t find it just by listening to the word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>But honestly, it&rsquo;s not just because of the \u00ab\u00a0h\u00a0\u00bb that spelling in French is difficult&#8230; is it?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>2. You <strong>make the connection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Examples<\/span>: u<strong>n_h<\/strong>omme, u<strong>n_h\u00f4<\/strong>tel&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, of course, <strong>there are exceptions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You <strong>still don&rsquo;t pronounce<\/strong> the \u00ab\u00a0h\u00a0\u00bb but <strong>you don&rsquo;t have to make the connection<\/strong> and there is no apostrophe. They are <strong>rarely next to each other<\/strong>. The French language doesn&rsquo;t like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when they are side by side, they usually <strong>combine<\/strong> to give a <strong>new sound<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Examples<\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a + u = <strong>[O]<\/strong> \u2192 <strong>au<\/strong>tour (around), f<strong>au<\/strong>x (wrong)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>e + i; a + i = <strong>[\u025b]<\/strong> \u00ea \u2192 p<strong>ei<\/strong>gne (comb)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>o + u = <strong>[u]<\/strong> ou \u2192 le c<strong>ou<\/strong> (neck), le l<strong>ou<\/strong>p (wolf)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>And if the French vowels are next to each other <strong>between two words<\/strong>:<br>\u00ab\u00a0Le \u00e2ge\u00a0\u00bb, then we use an apostrophe \u2192<strong> l&rsquo;\u00e2ge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <strong>A connection is made between a consonant and a vowel<\/strong>, which allows two words that follow each other to be <strong>connected phonetically<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Example<\/span>: <strong>Les amis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don&rsquo;t say : \u00ab\u00a0<s>les + amis<\/s>\u00ab\u00a0, but: \u00ab\u00a0Le<strong>s_a<\/strong>mis\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the last letter of the 1st word is a consonant (s) and the 1st of the 2nd word is a vowel (a). You then make the phonetic connection between the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, you think: \u00ab\u00a0<em>Great, in French, we pronounce sounds that don&rsquo;t exist, just to connect the words!&nbsp;Well okay, now that I know that, I&rsquo;ll still be able to do it.<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Um&#8230; Well, actually, no! <strong>We don&rsquo;t do all the connections<\/strong> because some are <strong>forbidden<\/strong>. For example with the word \u00ab\u00a0<strong>et<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb (and).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Example<\/span>: Je suis all\u00e9 \u00e0 Paris <strong>et <\/strong>\u00e0 Nice. (I went to Paris and Nice.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don&rsquo;t say: \u00ab\u00a0\u00a0\u00bb&#8230;et<strong> [ta]<\/strong> Nice&#8230;\u00a0\u00bb. <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">You don&rsquo;t make the phonetic connection<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How do you know then?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the beginning, <strong>make the connections between<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">article<\/span> and the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">noun<\/span><\/strong> (le<strong>s_a<\/strong>mis, u<strong>n_a<\/strong>vion),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and, <strong>between the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">adjective<\/span> and the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">noun<\/span><\/strong> (le peti<strong>t_ho<\/strong>mme, un gran<strong>d_i<\/strong>diot)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ah yes, you will laugh&#8230; Or not&#8230;<\/em> But when the last letter is a \u00ab\u00a0<strong>d<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb we pronounce the bond: \u00ab\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>t<\/strong><\/span>\u00ab\u00a0. <br>Un gran<strong>d_i<\/strong>diot \u2192 un [gran] <strong>[ti]<\/strong> [dio]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some exceptions, but normally, it&rsquo;s ok! \ud83d\udc4d\ud83d\ude0a<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the classic difficulties students have with the French vowels?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">u \u2192 as \u00ab\u00a0ou\u00a0\u00bb: NO!!!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lulu <em>vs<\/em> Loulou<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cul (ass) <em>vs<\/em> Cou (neck) \u2192 it&rsquo;s not exactly the same place on the body \ud83d\ude02<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid making the mistake, remember that the \u00ab\u00a0<strong>u<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb is pronounced like in the word \u00ab\u00a0<strong>tu<\/strong>\u00ab\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only when you see <strong>\u00ab\u00a0o + u\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong> do you pronounce <strong>\u00ab\u00a0ou\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">e \u2192 like \u00ab\u00a0\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb: NO!!!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Be careful with the present tense!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Je chant<strong>e<\/strong>\u201d &lt;&gt; \u201cJe chant<strong>ais<\/strong>\u201d. (\u00ab\u00a0<em>I sing<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb is not the same as \u00ab\u00a0<em>I sang<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you pronounce the final \u00ab\u00a0-e\u00a0\u00bb as an \u00ab\u00a0-\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb, the person you are talking to, will think you are talking in the past tense, for example in <em>imparfait<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They won&rsquo;t think: \u00ab\u00a0<em>oh, what a cute little accent<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0; no, they will think you are speaking in the past tense! This can create a misunderstanding&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When you spell a word, your name for example.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Example<\/span>: \u00ab\u00a0Bond, James Bond\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You say: \u00ab\u00a0J &#8211; A &#8211; M &#8211; E &#8211; S\u00a0\u00bb if you want to spell it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>French pronunciation can seem daunting at first, but with a little practice it&rsquo;s easy to get the hang of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The five French vowels are very different from their English counterparts, so make sure you spend some time practicing the correct pronunciation.
