That&rsquo;s a question that I get asked all the time by my students. And, to be honest, I&rsquo;m not really sure how to answer it. There are certainly a lot of words in French \u2013 but how many exactly, I can&rsquo;t say for sure. Estimates vary, but some sources put the number at around 200,000 words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it&rsquo;s hard to know for sure, since new words are added all the time. So how do you figure out how many words there are in French? The best way is to just start learning them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a little practice and exposure, you&rsquo;ll start picking up new words all the time. And before you know it, you&rsquo;ll be Speaking like a native in no time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what are you waiting for? Start learning French today!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the different types of French words?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few different types of French words that you need to know about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">French basic words<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First, there are basic words, which are the most common words in the language. These are the words that you&rsquo;ll see and use the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">French compound words<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there are compound words, which are basically two or more words joined together to form a new word. Compound words can be especially tricky to learn, but once you get the hang of them, they&rsquo;re really not that bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">French idiomatic expressions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, there are idiomatic expressions \u2013 which are basically groups of words that have a specific meaning that can&rsquo;t be translated literally into English. There are common nouns, proper nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, pronouns, determiners, prepositions and conjunctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">French common nouns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be things, people, abstract concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Examples<\/span>: <em>une tab<\/em>le, <em>un policier, le bonheu<\/em>r&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">French proper nouns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The proper name is derived from the common name but has the particularity of designating something unique. It is then written with a capital letter at the beginning of the word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Examples<\/span>: <em>la France, Christian, Chanel<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1 <strong>Tips<\/strong>: Be careful, when you read a text, to use capital letters. This will give you a lot of information to understand what we are talking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, what is the difference between these words : <em>hexagone <\/em>vs. <em>Hexagone <\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The first &#8211; <strong>hexagone <\/strong>&#8211; refers to the geometric shape that has six sides.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The second one &#8211; <strong>Hexagone <\/strong>&#8211; which is written with a capital letter, is used to designate France.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">French adjectives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It gives additional information about the name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Examples<\/span>: <em>gentil<\/em>, <em>grand<\/em>, <em>petit<\/em>, <em>vert<\/em>, <em>riche<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">French adverbs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>French adverbs allow to complete a sentence or to modify a verb or an adjective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Examples<\/span>: <em>hier<\/em>, <em>vite<\/em>, <em>lentement<\/em>, <em>demain<\/em>, <em>jamais<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">French verbs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the word that is conjugated in the sentence. The French verbs is the one that gives the information of the action that is performed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Examples<\/span>: <em>manger<\/em>, <em>dormir<\/em>, <em>danser<\/em>, <em>lire<\/em>, <em>faire<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be careful with conjugations! The conjugations will allow you to situate the action in time (past, present, future) but also in its possibilities of realization (Sure? Indicative and all its tenses. Uncertain? The conditional tense. Subjective? The subjunctive. Etc.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/learn-french-fun.com\/50verbes\/encart-the-50-verbs-most-used-by-the-french.php\" style=\"width:100%; height: 700px;\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">French pronouns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It allows to replace the name. There are all kinds of pronouns in French language: subject pronouns, complement pronouns, relative pronouns&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Examples<\/span>: <em>Je<\/em>, <em>lui<\/em>, <em>toi<\/em>, <em>dont<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">French determiners<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It introduces the noun and indicates the <strong>gender <\/strong>(masculine\/feminine) and <strong>number <\/strong>(singular\/plural) of the noun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the determiners, we distinguish :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the <strong>indefinite articles<\/strong>. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ex<\/span>: <em>un<\/em>, <em>une<\/em>, <em>des<\/em>&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the <strong>definite articles<\/strong>. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ex<\/span>: le, la, les&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the <strong>demonstrative determiners<\/strong>. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ex<\/span>: <em>ce<\/em>, <em>cette<\/em>, <em>ces<\/em>&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the <strong>possessive determiners<\/strong>. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ex<\/span>: <em>mon<\/em>, <em>son<\/em>, <em>leurs<\/em>&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the <strong>numerical determiners<\/strong>. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ex<\/span>: <em>trois<\/em>, <em>six<\/em>, <em>cent<\/em>, <em>mille<\/em>&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p> \u2757 <strong>Be careful<\/strong>: When you use an article, remember to agree the noun and the adjective. That is, put a final <strong>-e<\/strong> if it is feminine and an <strong>-s<\/strong> when it is plural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">French prepositions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They precede noun phrases or infinitive verbs. Prepositions are used to mark the function of words in the sentence. They usually announce a complement and precise which kind of complement. Prepositions link a word or a group of words with the verb or other words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Examples<\/span>: <em>\u00e0<\/em>, <em>de<\/em>, <em>par<\/em>, <em>avec<\/em>, <em>sous<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">French conjunctions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They are used to link groups of words together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the conjunctions, we distinguish :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Coordinating conjunctions. <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ex<\/span>: <em>mais<\/em>, <em>ou<\/em>, <em>et<\/em>, <em>donc<\/em>, <em>or<\/em>, <em>ni<\/em>, <em>car<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Subordinating conjunctions.<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ex<\/span>: <em>comme<\/em>, <em>lorsque<\/em>, <em>puisque<\/em>, <em>quand<\/em>&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So there you have it \u2013 some of the different types of French words that you need to know about. Whether you&rsquo;re a beginner or an advanced learner, these tips will help you improve your vocabulary and become fluent in no time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How many different words do the French use in their daily lives?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to The Incomplete Encyclopedia, the 600 most frequently used words make up 90% of any French text. The remaining 10% represent thousands of additional words!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On average, 600 different words are used every day by an individual. In the list of these words, we find: blue, super, bizarre for adjectives. Among the most used nouns, we find help, chief, child. As for verbs, we often use accept, abandon, love, buy&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udccc<a href=\"http:\/\/www.encyclopedie-incomplete.com\/?Les-600-Mots-Francais-Les-Plus\"> The Incomplete Encyclopedia<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Focus on learning certain French categories of words<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your priority for learning the French language, to be as optimal as possible, should be the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>prepositions, conjunctions, pronouns, determiners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>verbs, adverbs, adjectives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>nouns<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This way, you will be able to construct logical, complex sentences, even if you don&rsquo;t have an excellent level of French yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And you will see that you will take more and more pleasure in using French and speaking French.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>So there you have it, my dear students &#8211; a crash course in French words!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I hope this has given you a little taste of the vast lexicon that awaits you in the language.
